Say you run a application from a shared network directory. You update the shared directory, BUT there are one or more files that needs to be on the workstation for the upgrade to be complete.

An Example in Lotus Notes On the Upgrade of Lotus Notes from Rev 5.0.5 to 5.0.6. The File BookMarks.NTF on the workstation needed to be upgraded as well. We made a Winbatch program that we named NOTES.EXE and re-named the Notes program to REALNOTES.EXE. When the users clicked on there Notes icon.
They ran our Winbatch program. The Winbatch program checked the date of the BOOKMARKS.NTF on the shared directory with the date of the BOOKMARKS.NTF on the users local data directory. If they are not the local is older, then copy the one in the shared directory to the user's local data directory, then start the realNOTES program.

An Example in Windows OS. We have a Client with a process running on the dedicated workstation that connects to a database server. The Server is shutdown each night for backups. If the process is still running when the Server is shutdown. It crashes workstation (We did not write this process).
We wrote them a program that does the Windows commands to shutdown the process. Checks that the process is shutdown. Then sends a message the backup system to start the Server shutdown and backup.

An Example in Installation You need to Update or Install one or more programs on user's workstations. Most install program have some type of auto run script system build in to it. But you find you need to answer some setup questions differently for different groups.
We wrote Winbatch program that can ask the tech one question (like group) or read a environment variable, check a database stored on a networked directory. Then answer all the setup questions with the data found in the shared database.

The home of SMTPMAIL.exe a tool compiled with Winbatch. Send smtp mail from a dos batch file or from a windows dialog screen. Use it to test the setting of your SMTP server or firewall.

We use that program every time we setup a new SMTP server. You can the settings like blocking of some domains, Blocking or Allowing the Forwarding for message to other domains (Relay). Without re-configurating you own POP3 workstation.
